Questions about Talk Therapy...

Is there a difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

Counselling typically focuses on current issues and is often of shorter duration, while Psychotherapy delves into both past events and their impact on present life, often requiring more in-depth exploration. However, in practice, the distinction between the two approaches can be blurred. I am trained to adapt to the unique needs and preferences of each person.

How often will I attend Therapy?
Having decided to attend therapy it is important that you get into a routine of attending regular sessions. The process of counselling or therapy is work. Dealing with personal difficulties requires regular attendance and commitment to the process.

Generally, therapy occurs once per week at a mutually agreed time as we build trust in our therapist-client relationship and understanding of your difficulties through regular and consistent contact. However, in certain circumstances, sessions may be scheduled biweekly upon agreement with your therapist.

How many therapy sessions will I need?
‍Depending on what concerns you bring to our sessions, this varies from person to person. It is common for people to commit to 6 sessions to begin, and then we review from there or adjust from weekly to biweekly sessions, as needed.

How long do your sessions last?
‍A therapy session lasts approx. 50 minutes both in-person and online.

How do I pay for my session?

Payment is due at the end of each session. Various payment methods are accepted, including debit/credit cards, online e-payment, Revolut / Apple / Google Pay and Cash (exact change is necessary). I also have a card machine for on-site payment.

What much does therapy cost?

The standard fee for a session is €70.00. I have a limited number of reduced rate spaces (€50 - €60) available for clients who want to engage in therapy but do not have the financial means or are not working full-time. If you decide not to work with me, I may be able to recommend low-cost therapy options, online or in the community, which we can discuss so you get the most appropriate support and care.

Rate reductions are subject to availability. Please specify in your request if you want a reduced-cost space, if it is available. An online therapy session costs the standard or reduced rate.

Do you take private health insurance?

You will need to check that your provider covers you to claim for Psychotherapy. I can provide a monthly invoice for all sessions attended.

Do you have a Cancellation Policy or cancellation fees?

If you cancel less than 48 hours in advance (excluding Saturday or Sunday) of your session, you will be charged full price. You must give a minimum of 48 hours notice if you wish to cancel your session for free. If you would like to cancel an upcoming appointment, you can contact me by phone, text or email.

What happens if I am late or miss a scheduled therapy session?

If you are late attending your session, we will still end at the original time for the session. However, I understand that there may be exceptional situations such as severe weather, bereavement, illness, or emergencies, and in those cases, special consideration will be given.

If Steven has to cancel a session, it will be rescheduled or an alternative offered (e.g. an online or telephone session) at no additional cost to you.

What happens if I am late or forget my online session?

For online sessions, if you are late attending, I will stay online for 15 minutes to allow for any eventualities. If you do not make contact at this time, then the session will be considered missed and will be cancelled. If you fail to cancel, you will be charged the full fee for this missed session. If you are late attending your session, we will still end at the original time for the session. Special consideration will be given in exceptional circumstances.

What Age of Clients do you work with?
‍I currently only work with adults over 18+. I may refer to colleagues or community support(s) for particular support needs or specialisations, where this is appropriate in conversation with you.
